I don't know, but my personal jumps did horrible, I'm sure BC did a little better but I doubt it is rideable right now.

I am hoping there might be a night ride tomorrow. Today was nice and warm. Hopfully dried things up a bit.

The beginner side is swamped..the hilly side was wet yesterday and saturday..

did short laps on the lower backside both saturday and sunday..it was fast yesterday after being raked of leaves and pinestraw..kinda spotty wet saturday..overall good..also rode over to UNCW on friday afternoon..mostly a yawner, cause the place lacks technical type trails to even break a sweat on..overall prolly did 50 miles in 2.5 days.. 8)

It's easy for me to head there after work at 5. I can always hang out for a while. Anybody else?

Damn! I did maybe .50 miles around my neighborhood...LOL! I hope the weather holds out and it dries out a bit more.

Beginner loop is a swamp. The "temporary" remedy around the closed off raised bridges is 3-4 inches deep of water and sludge. That "temporary" remedy should be a priority in BC's to do list. Trail across the street took the rain well, a little more erosion on the hilly side, but all in all it was pretty dry.

We are trying to get the OK from the County to submit a permit request to the Army Corp. of Engineers so we can rock armor the trail where the closed rasied bridges are (and a couple of other low wet areas). We are waiting to hear back so we can get started!

We have been looking at this issue for a while. The cost of materials and the problem of ongoing maintenance of wooden ladder bridges are the biggest reasons an expressway (IMBA’s terminology for a gravel/rock solution) is the best way to go. The only drawback of the expressway is the need for a permit from the Army Corp. of Engineers before we can start. We are trying to get that process started but are waiting on a response from the County. These things have to go through the channels and can be painfully slow. We have people chomping at the bit wanting to go in there and get this done but we have to be patient. Again…if I/you/we owned this land it would be different…however this is NHC property so if we want to continue to use it we have to follow the correct procedures.

Cost of materials??

Your going to spend hundreds of hours in labor "armoring" a wetland..with permission of coarse..Yet you have an elevated bridge which already exist's which can seriously be updated within half the time by using some pressure treated wood and a little enginuity..just don't get it.. since the "armored" part is always going to be under water when it rains, thus increasing the chances of keeping the trail closed longer??

Kind of a catch 22 situation??
NO??

That structure cannot be updated. I'm not a big fan of using wood around here. Too much maintenance - nail pops, traction, inspections, etc. Doesn't hold up as well. For a skills area or short bridges it's fine. But that's up to the county - how much they want to put into this place. Right now it's not even a line item on the budget.

Not trying to throw gas on the fire, but why can't the structure be updated? Yeah, it has some planks that need to be replaced, probably needs a coat of sandpaper paint. I'm all for the armoring, I know you get old sidewalk chunks (which I've seen in the field), so they are more cost efficient. But abandon the whole thing together?

Logical..

Building outside needs weather resistant materials, not excluding decking screws to eliminate nail pops??

Wouldn't it be better to tear the structure down.. since it's been determined "useless"??

Sorry..to keep beating a dead horse.

First, we need the approval of the county to apply for the permit to use the concrete/rock. If that doesn't happen (which it should...just a matter of time) then we would have to determine what (if anything) could be used from the existing bridges and remove everything else. Right now we do need to remove all the planking on the bridges to make them unusable...so riders will STOP tearing down the banners blocking the bridges and then riding on the bridges...guess what would happen if Joe Expert rider wants to ride the ladder bridge becasue he dosen't want to get mud on his bike from the ride around...so he tears down the banners and leaves the bridges "open"...then mom and Jr. come by and see the "open" bridge and decide to ride on it...mom and/or Jr. take a major spill because of the state of the bridge...what then? Don't let that happen. If anyone sees that these banners blocking the 2 ladder bridges behind the Juvie center are ripped down, please replace them. If you see anyone ridding these bridges please tell them to use the ride around because the New Hanover Parks Dept. has made the decision to close these bridges.

I have asked for signs from the County that say "Trail Section Closed" to put at the beginning and ending of each of the 2 bridges to clearly notify riders...hopefully we can get those up soon.
