How stupid am I?

Postby longrun » Sun May 30, 2010 8:09 pm

I am thinking about doing a metric century in the mountains (Boone, NC) on a single speed. How stupid is this? Seriously. I've haven't owned a single speed bike since I was 8 and I haven't ridden a rode bike in....ever. Is this marginally stupid or monumentally stupid? Should I just suck it up and get a bike with lots of gears? I can't explain it, but something about the single speed appeals to me. I was thinking either a Specialized Langster or an IRO Mark V. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah, after mulling it over for a bit, I'm thinking gears too. Might still get a single speed to train on and ride around the neighborhood though.

Longrun, to save you the cost of a buying a different bike to train on...why not ride your geared bike and just don't shift?

You know, that would be a lot cheaper. But then I'd have less bikes. And less bikes is less fun. Unless you're my wife who thinks that less bikes is awesome.
